Blade Runner
I spent five and a half hours with Blade Runner (Final Cut) this weekend. It was worth it.

Two questions
1) When did everyone fancy themselves photographers? I know I live in a tourist city, but it seems like everyone carries around these nice cameras. What do people do with their photos? I can understand if you’re a photographer and you get paid for it, or you submit them for art shows or something of that sort, but why do we take pictures? “I was here. I have proof.” It’s...

Adam Gnade: IN A PLANE ABOVE THE MIDWEST →
gnade: It’s dark and I have my reading light on and it’s just me, 4am, the red-eye 12:40 out of Portland, everyone asleep in their seats, the cabin rocking to the side with (gentle) turbulence. The plane drops in space and the luggage makes a jostling sound and the engines scream out there in the cold…

Business Cards!
I got my business cards today in the mail. They’re pretty awesome, if I do say so myself. I didn’t put my name on them, but that’s okay - I just want people to go to the site. Maybe you can get one sometime if we meet up.

Geese
Today I almost hit a goose while riding my bike on the bike path on the way to work. The look on its face and the way it ducked its head and braced for impact is one of the saddest things I’ve ever seen. Thankfully an accident was averted. I only hope that this near death experience has caused the goose to appreciate its life even more. Perhaps spend more time with its family, knock some...

Criterion update
I watched the 1946 French film “Beauty and the Beast” last night and it was good. Very sweet, once you get past the whole notion of a beast kidnapping a woman and keeping her locked in his castle. I also watched “General Idi Amin Dada,” a doc about the 1970s Ugandan leader of the same name. The film is 90 minutes of seeing how crazy he was. Remember how in elementary...

A Book and a Movie
Watched Amarcord last night. I know I had a headache while watching this, so that didn’t help, but Fellini, I still don’t get you. It was a decent film and probably deserves a second viewing, but I have a few hundred other Criterion films to watch, so I probably won’t get around to it. On the flip side of that, I finished reading Vivian Gornick’s Approaching Eye Level and...

Criterion update
Watched two films this weekend: The Lady Vanishes and The Exterminating Angel. Both were so-so. Not bad, but not fantastic. The Exterminating Angel is one of the few Mexican films in the Criterion Collection and The Lady Vanishes is an early Hitchcock film (1938). Both films suffered from what I believe were slow starts. The other thing is that sometimes you’re just not in the mood for a...
